A simple globe turned into a world of fascination for me.
As a child growing up with not so much travelling (besides Yong Peng and Muar) I've always been fascinated with what is out of my well.
Sister had a globe and I like to turn her globe and point. I’d look at what country I pointed then the next time I’m at the library, I’d go and find book. There was no such thing as internet then. I guess that's when I start remembering the capital cities of the countries. Chile, Brazil, Antartica etc… and recognising flags. Not sure if I did spoil her globe at all from the constant turning and turning 🤭.
Flying gave me the opportunities to travel (yah! Sometimes so dead tired that all I did was sleep. But places with 2 nightstops I’ll be out) without coming up with air tickets and accommodation.
Girls not as fascinated as me when I bought a new globe with mountain ridges. Ooh..... I miss looking down at the alps. I had the best office but didn't have much time to look out of window coz working. Now when i travel I tend to look at the flightmap more often than watching a movie, look out of the window. Pity the paxs seated near me when the dark cabin is suddenly brightened with this suaku person looking out of the window. Maybe if you give me a cubicle with a window I'd be happy. If only the toilets have windows. Hmm..... Airbus and Boeing please look into that. For sure you'll see me going to the toilet more often, and will only choose the cubicles on the sides.
When I look out of the window and it’s land mass below, most times I see houses in cluster, all greenery. Sometimes leading me to find out about places. So thankfully for GPS, sometimes I’m able to identify where I am either by flight path on map and the pic I took n google map. I’ve seen Ha Long Bay without an drone. Even Naruto Whirlpools when plane making its descent in our impromptu July 2023 trip! That’s when I learnt about Awaji island’s vortex. On the same trip, I also saw something in patches of red along the western coast of Honshu. Che-che and I were discussing if they were tori gates. Indeed they were! and learnt it’s the beautiful Motonosumi Shrine which we made the trip this year. The world is so huge, if only I am rich I would be travelling into far fetched places.
Now when planning itineraries, most times I’ll look into Google maps and zoom in and find interesting spots. But of course they have to make it harder that we need to drive to reach those places 😢 . That’s why I enjoy our road trips more as I try to stop at secluded spots, places where hardly any foreigners are seen.
