10th Dec - A day running errands

The girls had their braces fixed today and since their appointment is in the morning, I decided to make the day running all my errands. I wouldn't have to do this if we didn't make that last minute trip to Bangkok, though I'm not complaining. It's a rare chance that we're able to leave for a short holiday this time since both girls had finished their major examinations and I've stopped their tuitions.  

Orthodontist finished with his masterpiece with the 2 girls at around 11+, we made way for lunch at Ichiban Boshi at Shaw Centre (at first) but we walked out after that still debating where to go for lunch. 
In the end, I decided that Parkway would have all the places I needed to go. Bank, shops and food - they will definitely find something to eat, well perhaps I should say something that they miss eating there since ... we literally lived there for 10 years!! 

1) Needed to get 2 new sweaters for lil' one since she kindda outgrew hers (finally!). At the same time che-che picked a coat for herself. She wanted mine but I love mine so got her a new one. I told her it'll be her last coat, she's spent the most amount of money every year as she keeps growing sideways. If she can't fit the next year then she'll have to 自己搞定. 
2) Daiso to get some empty bottles, a pair of scissors to cut their food for the next few days.
3) School shoes for lil' one. She kept pestering me to get her shoes with shoelaces. Somebody feels ashamed wearing velcro shoes in secondary school. Haha! 
4) A quick check on my TO-DO list on phone and I suddenly realised what was inkling in my mind before I left Orchard, I knew I had to drop by somewhere but simply cannot recall where. Was suppose to go down LUSH but .... oh well, I dropped by at Kiehl's instead. Shall blog about the Kiehl products in another entry. 
5) Secondary school - to check if they have booklist and their opening hours on 31st Dec. Will need to register lil' one another day. 
6) School pinafore and adjusted belt hook and ironed name label back home. We're left with the blouse and PE attire which I can settle on 31st or just let her buy it from the bookshop herself when school reopens.

Holiday getting closer and closer

Anything to do with going on a holiday makes me happy even if I've been to the country before. 

This Europe trip is beginning to materialise soon. Yay! And it is shown especially when itineries are all done and I start printing them out. Hmm...... I don't think I should be doing this next year right? 
But we have made plans for US in 2019. (Yay! More national parks) so might need some planning and booking to be done.    
I'm still dreaming about going on a holiday on my own. Switzerland, England, Scotland.... oh.... how I miss these countries. Sigh...........will I get the chance?

Another award to sum up her secondary school year

Opened our filled to the brim mailbox, was sifting out all the junk mails. In the end, only left with a few worthy mails. And somehow I recognised the font in the transparent see-through portion (the envelope is a plain envelope) on one envelope.

Surprise! Surprise! Che-che got another award. Well....must be her results all lousy to begin with lor.. Well, I don't mind if this applies to her final O's results coz that's what really matters. 

Che-che's response was really funny. "Huh? Not again? Can I don't go for the ceremony?"           
Well, her last award to sum up her secondary school. She had another award from the school this year. That makes a total of 4 or 5 awards from both school and Edusave from secondary alone.

Kiasu-ism to the max

Some time back I commented on my Facebook page that lil’ one classmates are sent for tuition barely a month after their PSLE. Well, that evoked only a few response. The rests kept quiet so I suspect they must be secretly doing that too?! 

So will changing the DSA criteria help in anyway? Will eliminating exams help? End of the day, is it the system or the parents that is driving the education up? 
Makes me think, maybe what I thought I was being kiasu and drilling in work is probably not enough as what other parents do. Maybe some secretly are working like in the dungeons? Hmm.....poor children !!

I had the same thoughts - drafted 5th Jan #late posting#

This crossed my mind some time last year. I was wondering why my girls are dumb, and if parents’ genetic components affect the offsprings. Maybe so, that’s why my kids are damn dumb when it comes to academic. 

And today, I got my answer.

Odds are, your parents used to joke that they’re responsible for giving you “all your brains” — just like you and your partner probably argue who passed down the smarts to your kids! But a recent study featured in Psychology Spot might be putting that argument to rest for good.
The research claims that people are born with conditioned genes that work differently depending on if they’re from your mother or father and that certain genes come specifically from one parent or the other.
As it turns out, when it comes to your smarts, those genes are from your darling mother. Intelligence genes are located on chromosome X and since women carry two, that means children are twice as likely to get their intelligence from mom.
It’s possible that your father can pass on some of his intelligence genes to you, but chances are they won’t have an impact on your brain. This is mainly because the dominant gene (which in this case is the double X chromosome coming from your mom) is the more likely trait to actually be activated in the body/brain.
And, yes, it can work the other way:
“If that same gene is inherited from the father, it is deactivated,” reports the study in Psychology Spot. “Obviously, other genes work the opposite, are activated only if they come from the father.”
Just not when it comes to your brain power, apparently!
Furthermore, the Medical Research Council Social and Public Health Sciences Unit in the United States did a study on mothers to potentially determine what traits moms pass on to their kids. In 1994, the researchers interviewed 12,686 young people between the ages of 14 and 22. Their questions focused on the children’s IQ, race, education and socio-economic status.
One of the clearest results from the study was that the intelligence of the child was almost always correlated to the IQ of the mother.
We’re sorry to break it to you, dads, but the results don’t lie! Do you disagree with the findings of this study? Have you always felt you got your intelligence from your father or that your kids got their dad’s brain?

Fever fever go away. Lil' fever came back in afternoon. For the first time she didn't complain y she didn't hv music lesson (tho teacher was in the house) n Che-Che took the whole 1 1/2hrs. 5pm all clear, 7pm complain tired n fell asleep.
Looks like she needs to skip school tmrw. Argh! I need to bring her to collect her passport leh! Alr postpone since Friday.

Mr Moon

Catching the moon over a period of time leading up to 八月初十五 - 24th Sep, which is also the Mid-Autumn Festival. 
However the time I caught hold of the moon are different, some taken at 7+, some at 10+. By then with the angle I'm taking, the shadow cast is different. No choice, I'll be a little free once the exams are over.   

After a few days of cloudy nights, the rain brought a respite to moon-gazing. On 19th, finally I was granted a 56% gazing clarity. Woah! A big jump from the usual 6 - 9% clarity.

Her "birthday cake" for today. Insisted that we sing birthday song again today n tmrw n the day after tmrw. I asked her how long she needs to celebrate her marriage next time. One month? She nodded her head.

It's been 3-4hrs since she woke up. And she's declared she wasn't going to do any work, infact days ago told me she didn't want to go ballet; Berries; she was going to do NOTHING the whole day. 
Came back home after dropping che-che in school n she watched her recorded Mr Oh for only 30 mins n then restless she said she has school lead portal to go in today. Told her to do it the next day, she refuses. I was dead tired coz didn't sleep well last night n needed a rest myself, can do housework this evening. End up only I napped while she was doing what she had to do and she did extra work herself.
She even declared she shouldn't drink milk on her birthday. Next minute she came to me with her Twisties and I said "you shouldn't eat chocolates n tidbits on your birthday"

My lil' girl told EVERYONE it's her birthday today. So before her class came down, other children came to the table and said "it's Aricia from xx1 class. We know her, she told us this morning." 
She's really happy. 😀

Lil' one's extremely happy today. Che-che just started on her home-based learning. Haven't camped in car for so long already. Dare not bring her anywhere lest distraction. She's on my netbook while I'm on her laptop. Reverse!

My girl is 4 today. And she declared "I am 4, a big girl. No more tu-tu (pacifier) in day and night".... she hesistated but too bad we heard the night time. And she's sleeping without one tonight.

Trip to Gardens by the Bay, which opened not too long ago

 Oh boy! I was so slim then..... time to do something after my PSLE
 Che-che is so cute here. She's all grown up 

 Lil' one kept complaining cold ..... then she still continued playing with the water mist. She ended up rather wet. ?!?!?
This is still her favourite place. Che-che and myself prefers to go Flower Dome. This girl likes to get herself ridiculously wet (apparently she finds it funnr lor!)

Now that we needed navigation around in the Cloud Forest. There's only one way in and one way out. *winks* 
But this has always been her habit. Taking the map and read the map. Lil' one will run amok coz she knows someone is around to bring her out, che-che prefers to read and she'll tell us where to go. Anyway, her sense of orientation is good! Helps that she always observes what's outside the car when we're driving so she recognises places. I remember once I needed her to go to a certain bus stop (very new to her) from her holding area, I was able to briefly tell her where though we didn't really pass by that bus stop before.

Gardens By the Bay is now our favourite place to go, our as in the girls and me. I'd usually bring them in the day time / school hols / when the man is slogging hard to let us spend $. Free aircon and super relaxing. I joined as a member in April, I signed the girls up in May/June when there was a 50% price cut. Joining as a member, I was able to have a nice 2 hour FOC parking, timing just nice for a solo trip on my own when I do not want anyone to disturb me when I'm taking pictures. With all the different flower displays and a membership card, gives us better excuse to go. After O's! After O's we shall have a meal at Satay Club instead of Bakerzin.

Ahhhh........ then I had the energy to plan for birthday parties and struggling to find venues to hold a party. Now that we have the function room here, the girls are all grown up. Still thinking if I should hold a Sweet 16th Birthday for che-che or not?

She found it funny and came up with her question
"che-che, what is car+lorry+truck+motorcycle+bus = to?"
" Huh? I dunno. Mummy do you know what's the answer?"
"Traffic jam!"
Kids burst out laughing. Mei-mei continued her ridiculous questions
"che-che, what is Aricia + Aricia + Aricia + Aricia + Aricia + Aricia = to?"
"I dunno... Mummy what's the answer?"
"OMG! 6 monkeys!!"

Mr Moon - 13th Sept

Have been so busy lately, haven't been paying attention to the planetary stuffs. Today, decided to take a look. And at 7.36pm the moon was already heading towards the horizon. The block blocked my view as it was just at the edge of the building about to leap off.

Busy with what

So I'm not going to care about that 42 drafts for the time being. I shall post what I need to post right now. 

So what have I been busy with? Apart from the daily never-ending household chores and being an unpaid chauffeur, and sitting through with lil' one. There are times where I can leave her alone as I can't help her with those revision, I scan stuffs.

Scan stuffs
It was easy to pack che-che's primary stuffs in 2014, as we packed almost everything for lil' one. However for lil' one's case, everything just ends here. Thank goodness! There were some really good materials either from tuition or from friends, or I typed out for them which will be a waste to discard them away leaving no trace. So I decided to scan them into the computer. If she needs them for reference next time, at least we can look for it in the hard disk. I'm trying hard to declutter the house.  辛苦的 decluttering. I had been doing this for the past few months but it was only 2 months ago that I can fully concentrate on this as prior to that, I had to type in notes for her which were on the top of the priority list of To-Dos. What notes? I think I have this somewhere in my draft folder so I shall not re-type the whole lot.  
I wish I had an auto-feed scanner where I can leave it in the tray and it starts scanning while I busy with other things.Can kill two birds in one stone. 
I scan them early into the mornings too, until 2+am. My sleeping time is really haywire now. 

New things to do
1) Plan holiday itinery x2. PSLE Marking Days and the year-end trip
HKG in October : Though we've been there many times. Wondering if there's a need for me to plan or should we just anyhow walk here and walk there? 
Year-end trip : apart from the air ticket, nothing is done so far. The man is leaving everything to che-che. Which is ridiculous coz it'll be too late to book hotels or in some case, Anne Frank Haus needs advance booking. I mean, leave it to them then nothing is done properly. Then again, leave everything to me is chiong all the sights. Will he follow the itinery? Should I get Youth Eurail pass for them to save on the rail fares? All these need early planning. You mean they don't know?    

2) Need to burn the JVC videos to get some space for our year-end holiday. 
You're right. I'm one super old-fashioned person who still carries a video camera around for our holidays. 
Asked dad to pass me his recorder so that I can do it at home but he refused to lend me, as if I will spoil his stuff or refuse to return to him. Then I also worry if he'll do what he did last year. He recorded from the playback on TV. ?!?!?! Clarity is not there but as usual he always return my stuffs late. Rather he likes to procrastinate and then suddenly say he only have 2 days to finish everything. I usually give it to him with a month or two grace period and tell him much earlier I need the camera back. And guess what? He procrastinate so my earlier date became the few days before trip. And I still gotta chase chase chase. In the end, last year instructions on how to get the videos out in segments. I put individual holidays into one individual project. And he jumbled up the CDs, in one CD I can have Spain holiday and suddenly I have something else inside. When I got back the CDs last year, I had to accept it coz there simply wasn't anymore time left and he didn't want to lend me his recorder. I can do it while I'm doing housework and I know when the videos will end coz' I know the contents. 
I have a recorder at home which nobody wants to help me install. Ask hubbby, he shrugs his shoulder and walks away. Ask my father, he forever busy busy. Also I wasn't sure if the remote control works anymore. Or whether this recorder even works with this new TV!! We have our first recorder back in Punggol but it doesn't work with new TVs so I have no idea why I still keep that DVD recorder. Even this current one, I'm hoping that a miracle will happen and it works so that I can reformat 2-3 CDs which I didn't get the chance to do so last time. You must be asking me why did I even bring this over now. Coz' I was hoping for the time to do it but apparently not so coz I have my hands filled with so many stuffs. 

Ideally I wanted everything in the house to be stored into one hard disk. Like my 亲家, he has no CDs in his house.  He tells me in every room is like a karaoke room, the kids wants to watch what channel, they key in they get it. The only setback is that you need one gigantic memory CPU, like FBI/CIA keeping datas. Told hubby about this, and he tells me to find out more myself - like I'm one smart IT person like that?! In the end, my idea of hiding whatever wiring before renovation went down the drain coz' nobody to help me and I was on solo, I needed to pace myself what is more important to do - then it was che-che's PSLE. 
Before moving, I did burn some DVDs into digital format and got rid of the DVDs but after that I found I didn't have enough time to finish up the rests so moved them into this house. 3 years later, I still haven't found the time to do so. If i can remember how to do it also. 

So technically I should digitalized these videos right? Then again, nobody to help me. The only way I thought I can do so is to use Pinnacle Studios or Adobe Premiere but it may take up more space per disk than ordinary burn via DVD recorder. Never mind, put into CD first to confirm I have the video recordings out before I delete the cam-corder to get some space. When I'm free (like when?) then maybe burn into hard disk? Double work? I think so...... but currrently now as I'm typing this, I'm also scanning at the same time and copying some holiday files over to computer. But the files all jumbled up, they can't sort it according to the "time taken". ARGH!!!! It will take me some longer time to edit them by myself. If only I can have that DVD recorder - nobody sells it now. It's almost as good as being an antique item just like DVD portable players with screen. Who uses that anyway? I used to own one, bringing them with me on holidays to keep the young girls entertained. Now, with one handy dandy handphone everything is all inside.     

Anyway, right after the PSLE I'll still be kept busy. Photobooks, tidy house, clear stuffs, mend the wall cracks and re-paint the PES, clean the grouts in the whole house. I scrub the grouts every half a year but I haven't been able to do so this year. I really wish hubby can help especially for those jobs around the house, I really can't manage on my own.

3) Late birthday celebration?
Had this thought of giving lil' one (and maybe che-che - though her idea of a celebration would be one without her family) one celebration before she graduates. I find it's so silly that now we have the use of the function room, we hardly use it. Although I've proven over the years that I can get something impressive out within a week (meaning late nights and slogging through)..... hmm...... forget it. Save my own life.

So I've got 42 drafts in here. Wow! That's alot! What the heck have I been complaining about? I'll go through them another day, for all you know 我的气都消了,不需要 post the blog entry. Heehee! 

Last 3

Yippee! Last 3 lessons then no more trips to Parkway Parade on a crowded weekend. I’ve also made the withdrawal from the centre today. Lil’ one wanted to continue with their Science Sec 1, she’s attached to the centre as she’s joined them since 2014 year end. 有点感情。But I think it’s time to say goodbye for now, I can’t stand the thoughts of getting stuck in there again. 

But last 3 lessons also means that the dreaded PSLE shit is looming so close.

I'm so tired, I've decided to leave things as they are. Whether she gets to the school of her choice ultimately all lies in her performance. I'm so sick and tired of nagging and scolding her. She deal with it on her own. 谁叫她不听我的劝告 Yup! I've met with ups and downs while journeying the shitty P#$% with both girls. Each have their strengths and weaknesses. I've got the grouchy post drafted somewhere here but never got the chance to complete it. I'm so glad that I've only got 2 two girls to go through this shit. My grandchildren? Better tell them to leave the country..... it'll never get better but my grandkids will be even more stressed.

My first steam egg

I can’t believe this. I know I’m not a good cook but have managed to cook some decent dishes to feed my girls. (Well they survived didn’t they?) I’ve steamed fish, white pomfret ; cod being the lil’ one’s favourite but I’ve never steamed egg before! 
Hubby steamed eggs so many times at home for the girls and I shudder to think my eggs turning out disastrous. 
I took the challenge today and hey! I’ve got two thumbs up from the girls who said my steam egg is like from Sakae Sushi. dear girls that’s coz I added dashi; daddy added chicken stock. The top didn't look nice and so asked the Chef Mama and she told me my fire is too big. Will do better the next time.
