Earthquake + a little geography lessons

28th July @ 3.36pm (SIN) 

Was busy around the house when I saw down to rest awhile and saw the missed message from M about an earthquake in Kumamoto occurring 9 mins ago. Kumamoto is about 100km away from her. 

I exclaimed out at home, and hubby nodded. Yah he knows the news even faster than me. Coz I was working around the house so missed the news many many many minutes later 😉.

Although earthquakes is so common and she’s more experienced / calm than me I can’t help but worry for her. 7.1 by Japan Meteorological Agency (6.8 by USGS Earthquake Hazards Program) leh! Is she alone at home at that time so I messaged to ask about her. Thank goodness it’s the summer holiday so the girls are at home. M her youngest was holding on the bookshelf and the other hand on Instagram. Haha! My first response was “posting in Instagram?” 

The wanna-be geologist

This super crazy n scared getting dirty me wanted to be a geologist before 😂😂. I told my Geography teacher, Mrs Quintal that before. Ok I can’t be a geologist but that doesn’t stop my interest. I had just a little free time as I was having my dinner so went to check. 

If you do not know, in geography class we learn of the tectonic plate boundaries. But they are not the only fault lines, there are thousands of fault lines across the world with lots of regional fractures.  

How many fault lines in Kyushu?

Kyushu has dozens of individual active faults grouped into major designated fault zones, with the Japanese government specifically tracking 6 major active fault zones of primary regional significance alongside the island's broader rift systems. 

Major Fault Systems and Zones

Hinagu Fault Zone: Extends northeast-southwest through Kumamoto Prefecture and the Yatsushiro Sea, heavily involved in recent major regional seismic activity.
Futagawa Fault Zone: Runs alongside the Hinagu system in central Kyushu, forming a prominent strike-slip and normal fault network.
Japan Median Tectonic Line (MTL): Japan's longest fault system, which cuts across the eastern and central parts of the island.
Beppu-Shimabara Graben: A complex rift and volcanic zone cutting across central Kyushu packed with numerous active normal faults

Which fault line caused this earthquake? 

The likely culprit is the Futagawa-Hinagu fault zone, the same system that devastated Kumamoto in April 2016

WHAT?!?! 😭

Saw in their FB page. Why why why do they have to close the hotel? I hope another hotel takes over the building. 

My heart hasn’t left since last year, Infact this year 还是心痒痒，很想回去. I wanted to go and stay overnight coz I want to stargaze in the open. I wanted to see the milky way as clearly as possible. People do camp during autumn, this place is as busy as it gets in autumn where the foliage is simple gorgeous. But ehh…..like ah-nia is so daring to camp ⛺️ in the open, later want to pang jio how? Later the bears 🐻 come out how? 

But now ….. 

Spoil 了 😩

Bought this sometime in 2020 during CB. Then everything had to be delivered to us coz we were all locked in, I vaguely remember it was something that I had been looking forward to. I badly needed to scrap away the dirt on my skin. 

Recently I tried to use it but it died very fast, as in I can only clean my chin area and then it stopped. Initially I thought the battery had depleted. So for three occasions I had to charge fully and then same thing happened. 

算了吧! 6 years later also time to change. 

This Taobao convert shopper decided to check out. But …. I don’t know how good it is. I’ve bought a few “beauty gadgets” including one that stated on my packaging “vibrator” 🤣 from Taobao and it seems the gadgets all only make the sound but doesn’t seem to work. 

In the end I chose back Labelle, a Korean brand. Bought L8 coz I only need the peeling mode, I barely used the ionization mode with my L6 anyway. I prefer to use Vanav for that function. Can’t wait for it to arrive, I need to clean my mor-peng face.

This cute おばあさんwaved to us from a corner of the temple premises and I felt so obliged to go to her coz ....rude to ignore her when I waved back to her. Felt like she was beckoning to us in Hansel and Gretal, only thing she isn't a witch 😂.  Think she's in her late

80s or early 90s and still so alert.

She offered us a tea and then I felt paiseh so bought a pack. She asked us where we were from, which we understood her question but answered back in halting Japanese. Then she asked us how do we say Thank You in our language. At least her question sounds more sensible than the American guy in US whom we had conversation prior in english, asked how do we "say thank you in wherever you're from" 😅

I don't mean to be a bitch but I did pause and replied him, "Thank You."

Athena Ting asked me before how long it'll take to walk from one end to another of Central Park. Gave her an estimate (based on my walking speed last time) coz I never walked all the way to the end, she can find it out herself next time.

Maybe with her longer legs she'll walk much faster than I did and also coz I like to #tHia] take pictures last time K.

I do rmbr well tho I went out with a CSS,Christine, to meet her friend, who has an apartment facing Central Park. Lovely view of the park from his house. Told myself I'd love to own an apartment there one day.

And it was that same flight where she n I fell asleep in the front row while watching The Scarlet Pimpernel (to the Broadway cast, I'm terribly sorry) as we were both jet-lagged.

Chilli crab!! I dunno if this oddly timed meal is going to be our dinner or what....actually already cooked rice at home. I guess will wait for che-che, let her have her dinner here.

Where was I when I was in Sec 1 after school? Home!

I was so guai to bus home everyday even tho' I was a latchkey child.

Now I see Sec 1 boys n girls hanging in Macs.

Nothing to 大惊小怪 if u see the "blue girls" sitting amongst the "termites". But they're Sec 1 leh! In my time, you'd only see girls 'buoh-ing n giggling at boys' in Sec 3.

Oh my oh my! Kids mature really fast now.

Makes me fear if my girl will be like that. I need a ROPE!!! Hahaha!

Haven’t been able to stargaze for so long, it’s always so cloudy when I happen to walk out into the PES so I kinda gave up. 

Imagine my excitement when I read the article today. But it’s between 2am and 5.30am 😒, lao-niang need my sleep lah! Tomorrow going to fight as much as I can in class coz I’ve already missed two Fight-Do classes 🤭. I wonder if my penthouse neighbour will be able to see it.

So I’m thinking… I used to say that I wasn’t able to go to dark spots for all these spottings last time coz I have to do my motherly chauffeuring duties the next day but now I don’t do much so what’s stopping me? Maybe the only fear or worry I will have is whether I’ll bump into any hantu 👻 coz nobody to accompany me.

The girls asked me "so what is tchr P going to teach us today? Grade 2 and 4 pieces?"

I don't think so n don't believe in only practicing exam pieces. She'll let them play other books first for sure.

Footnote written in 2023 :

Apparently she only wants to teach them just to pass their exams 😓. So when they were in the higher grades, the girls lost interest in piano. When che-che was in Sec 4, I continued her lessons coz lil’ one was still having her lessons. I didn’t want her to lose the momentum if we had stopped the lessons for more than half year. I asked tchr P to just teach her from other music books we have at home, so it can also be a form of relaxation in her tense O’level year. Her reply was “no, that one she can play herself” 🙄. For that year, they both received scoldings all the time from her coz made mistakes in playing. Of course lah! School was so busy, no time to practice at all.

Lil' one would often tell us abt this classmate of hers who would tell her she's doing P3 to P6 work. I don't believe her and said "I don't think so. How can she do P6 work?" Must be a girl boasting right?

I thought I was evil enough to suggest "I photocopy Che-Che's work for her to do." But then my Che-Che said "so hard u sure she can do? I photocopy P5 for …... No! I photocopy my Maths Olympiad for her to do. See she can do or not!"

Hmm…got evil mother sure got evil daughter. Haha!

Today's 7th day, supposedly FIL will be back. Or was it early this morning?

I thought can talk to him. Mom say must keep quiet; cannot turn on light - will be frightened. But my girls super noisy now as we just got back home. Hubby not in SIN, so cant see him for the last time?? Wah lau eh...ask the girls to keep quiet, they more noisy then Aricia kept asking "why? Why? Why?" Father, ur welcome to come back.
