On This Day - (31st July) #Reminders from FB#

31st July 2021

Thank you Siam Square Mookata. We really miss your food.

Happy grilling! Happy steamboating! Happy kids!

Footnote written in 2022 :

It's nice but ehh...no.... I think I won't even grill food in my balcony. My neighbours might complain, I have very super complain kings/queens here.

31st July 2020

Nah... let me transport you to my home. My nature-like home. Hove the view from my home. Nice greenery outside, got baby pool view, nice waterfall sound. So peaceful ... listen to the water cascading down…..imagine you're in paradise .... until lil' one starts yakking away in the background. Spoiler!

31st July 2020

This caught my attention on the way to pick che-che from school yesterday. This is the side view as it wasn't convenient for me to snap the actual view.

Looks like the animal was stretching out it's hands to welcome the sun (yup! That was where the sun was) after all the raining.

31st July 2017

What's going on? It's 2.27pm now and no one is out from school yet?

31st July 2016

Today's competition results.

Yay! Top in Division. Quite surprised coz I felt CCHS was rather powerful plus I also heard 2 squeaks n 1 flat note in our girls' song.

The end of a tiring month, with half day on Saturdays gone. Rest a while before another Saturday morning is taken for some audition.

31st July 2013

Now I know y everyone's crazy about Minions.

We only managed to watch it today after their home-based learning.

They're really cute!!

31st July 2011

They were close as brothers. And now the older brother gave up his will to live and decided to join his younger brother. Traumatic week for us! 2 passing within 8 days. God bless his soul.

31st July 2011

U see lah! Papa not around, they invaded my whole bed. Where am I going to sleep?

Footnote written in 2022 :

It was a Sunday in 2011 too, girls sleeping in my bed coz daddy is not in SIN.

Now? 11 yrs later? Lil' one up since 8am, che-che still in koon-ing 💤 land. And they both will sleep in their rooms, wouldn't want to sleep with me even tho all of us turn on aircon

"And we begin again ...."

A popular quote from lil' one when she was a teeny weeny tiny girl.

After all the persuasion from lil' one, and although I know I won't be expecting her to grow any taller anymore, this is the first brew after a long break.

Another thing to pack in luggage next time

Other people always have their luggage filled with souvenirs for their ah gong, ah ma, aunties and uncles, I tend to have a whole load of rubbish inside. I always collect ticket stubs, stamps and brochures (some are available online but I don’t spend time checking when I’m there) when travelling. And scan them in when I return and throw the hard copy away. That’s me trying to digitalise everything, so I can put them in the photobooks 😬 too.

After the recent trip, I was telling che-che that I should have a hard case in the luggage bag and in the hand carry/sightseeing bag next time. This will prevent our small papers getting crumpled.

白发的挣扎

A problem that comes with age - white hair.

Argh! Actually not in my case, think there’s a genetic failure somewhere that I had white hair when I was a teenager (che-che has the same genetic failure too ☹️)

In recent years, I realised my hair grow out so quickly that the whites are visible 2 weeks after I’ve coloured my hair. 2 weeks! No joke! I can’t be making countless trips to hair salon everytime too as it’ll cost a lot of money.

Apart from the ah-pek hair dye which I use every few months. I’ve resorted to other temporary measures. Namely from :

1) hair darkening shampoo (Bawang)

2) to temporary pens. But can usually only remedy the visible front hairline spots. Initially the first usage was so promising. The next time I used, my “touched up” hair turned alien green 👽. Muahaha! Not really sure what happened?

3) Recently I came across this and decided to try this. It is easier to apply than the Hidaka’s haircolour brush. I won’t end up having blots of black ink on my scalp with this mascara-like.

I don’t think I’ll use this that regularly too. I’m not the hardworking must 打扮美美 person,  but when I do want to make myself a little happier by not seeing the white hair this comes to the rescue.

Hmm….

What really happened to her wheels?

At Hiroshima station she ran to me and stopped me from walking, saying something from the wheel came off. I wasn’t sure what she was talking about and asked her to go back to retrieve it incase any one accidentally kicks it away in the crowded station.

I stared at the rubber thing and can’t figure out how to put it back coz the plate is missing. Since when? luckily still can drag her bag around lor! But we found it hilarious that it came off and imagined she was chasing after the runaway wheel. No choice, I can’t fix it so will have to do it once we get back home.

So untimely but had to quickly send it out for repairs as she’ll need her luggage soon, in about 4 weeks

18th July (Tue)

At the service centre in Tannery Lane, the two strangers infront and behind me were talking. And they shared that they’re using Briggs and Riley luggage which has lifetime warranty. Never heard of it but it sounds interesting.
The guy behind me casually mentioned maybe covid and no travelling, and now all the luggages are spoilt. Hmm…but since VTL was announced we already flew 7-8x already, I think it would be rough handling that caused her wheels to be damaged not coz it was in the storage for long.
The lady in front of us has to wait for 4-6weeks 😧, the guy behind us just collected his 2 other luggage’s which had him waiting for 2 mths. He is also using the same brand bag as the lady, only we’re the cheapo Samsonite user.
Came to us, we only need to wait for a week and we changed all 4 wheels instead of 1. It won’t have the Samsonite cover but who cares. Probably they’ll recycle our other 3 good wheels 🤭

19th July (Wed)
Received a message in the evening that her bag is ready for collection. yay! Then it’s time to start packing for her 10mths of elopement.

20th July (Thu)
She followed me in the morning as I left for my Fight-Do class. It was raining heavily when we were leaving Tampines, so I asked her to do the driving. It’ll be easier if there’s no parking lot outside their small office. I can jump off from the car and let her drive elsewhere to wait for me and come back for me later.

Something good

Something good that arises after the Japan hols with che -che. She finally wakes up very early!! 🤣🤣

Her sleep late wake up late (at 12pm or later) since her Summer 2023 term started (29th May) infuriated me. She didn’t have to go to Uni anymore, the module that she’s taking is conducted online and only needed to do HBL thrice. That explains why she was able to find time to travel.

Since we got back, she’s been awake much earlier than me 😅.

Tomorrow will be my first Fight-Do after 3 weeks break, I don’t think I’ll have the energy.
Asked if she wanted to follow me then after that I can bring her to collect her luggage, and she requested leaving house at 8am for Macs breakfast. Oh my! Can I wake up that early? I’m trying to spend some time with her before she flies over for her studies.

It’s turbo showtime!

.. in my new showroom kitchen. Cooking a full meal and not just instant noodles or warming up soupy food hor!

Hmmm….. I should seriously consider if i want to put my Click n Grow back here. I won’t have much working space if it’s back.

But the cleaning up is super duper easy! Considering that I also didn’t do much frying. Still, I don’t think I should be careless in my cleaning in case 🐜 🐜 comes.

Kong pao chicken from Olivia Tan’s Chinese Flavours book.
I reduced black vinegar (coz the girls don’t like vinegar), dried chilli (Che-che’s no spice tolerance) and put in lesser sugar (lakanto actually) to the 400+g of chicken fillet.

😅 I noticed some small little shredded chicken. I was only a few seconds late when I realised I wasn’t on reverse mode. Taste wise ….. so so
The family’s food intake gauge :
1) is it the man don’t like it with too many meat dishes? I had both pork n chicken. He hardly touched it.
2) che-che said it’s spicy. What?! Prolly only took one piece
3) lil’ one fussed over the ‘accidentally ate ginger’ and asked me not to put ginger next time. Huh? She didn’t eat much also
4) I’m left to clear the leftovers. Lucky I’m not on keto now.

Pork belly which was marinated months ago but never got the chance to cook it. I had the recipe in my phone BUT I can’t retrieve it anymore so just hantam anyone put ginger + black soya sauce + lakanto and stir fry them. Wah….not bad got the sticky sticky like braised meat. Now that I want to keep the recipe but have no idea what it is 🤣.
I was also made to finish this. And still have to say this “lucky I’m not on keto. If not sure leftovers in the fridge”. Oh my! You be the judge and see whether my family is fussy or not? Isn’t it difficult for me to cook for the family?

Fried over stove. This vegetable dish and lil’ one’s steamed tofu with marinated pork were done over the stove to expedite cooking

Dealing with the leftovers also headache. How to just cook 4 pieces of chicken, 6 pieces of pork each? As it is I normally cook lesser than what’s written on the recipe  but nobody finishes them. Put the leftovers in the fridge  is macam for show only coz I always end up junking them away 2 days later.

During other meal times, I even saw hubby opening up can food. What the heck? Here got dishes you don’t eat n open canned food?

About to spew vulgarity on the difficulty to cook for them. Really! If only they all can chin-chye eat.

Today evenbefore I started cooking, che-che already didn’t show enthusiasm and was looking for 黑黑的菜.

Quite some time back girlfriend, MH, told me what I can cook and showed me the dishes she did and how she just portioned out the food for the family (I believe coz now everyone also comes back at different timing). She even did burger as a meal and they gladly ate it. If it’s my family? The man will not eat coz he will go hungry after that and to him a meal means there must be carb + dishes. The girls will ask “that’s it?”

Cook what they like to eat

MH even told me to cook what they like to eat. Ehh…. Of course I know. But how? Man prefers vegetables n perhaps spicy rich rendang (but the girls don’t eat!). Girls prefer meat but they’re fussy if they see ginger, onion garlic. It’s the only dish I cook more coz two of them but I run the risk of food wastage as well.

If I cook what they like; somebody will not like it. One likes soba; the other likes ramen. How to (if eg) make fresh noodles ? Hubby don’t like Japanese! Che-Che likes fried stuffs so she likes tempura but lil’ one doesn’t. So I need to splatter and mess my whole kitchen just for that few pieces of tempura. Sigh….

Today, I even commented if I follow the recipe to the tee and you all still don’t like the food means you all are really super fussy. If people can write a book and other people also cook and eat and don’t complain as much as you all, you all are damn f [so close to spew an additional adjective] fussy.

Hotel Reviews - Japan and my incessant ranting

Well, if you don’t mind getting cheap hotels then read on coz I’m a cheapo traveller.

Osaka

Location : 4/5

It took us more than 15mins to get to the hotel the first time as we had to orientate ourselves without any GPS (Strange! As we did put in the Japan SIM card in the plane) and in the ☔️. Argh! The worst thing is to struggle with luggages in the rain.
Subsequently it got easier as we can find our way around. The nearest subway exit/entrance is only a 3mins walk, very clear cut from the hotel by walking straight and then turn right. The only setback is that the exit/entrance point do not have any escalators, won’t be easy for people with leg problems.
Dotonbori - the famous stretch is only about 5 minutes walk away. How good can that be? The place where a whole stretch of food stalls and snack stalls entice one’s appetite into a crazy frenzy.
As what che-che noticed there were love hotels around our area 🤭, so ….. ok at least the cheapo me didn’t book our accommodation wrongly by the hour.

Amenities in room : 5/5

Not sure if this is a fair review coz basically I’m a traveller who only need the basic needs, I don’t need luxurious hotel stay.

The room is small at 13sqm with a small double bed but for only 2 nights, I can put up with it…. until I was left in the cold 🥶 when che-che pulled the blanket and cocooned herself in it. It’s pretty small with not much walking space, thus proving why I don’t like to travel with too many luggages (still can’t comprehend how some people can travel with more bags than people)

Since the small luggage is redundant and empty, I left it standing at a corner. Anyway, what che-che suggested after that was to put the gifts for Aunty Mio and our snacks purchases in the small luggage for the trip so we don’t have to open up the luggage.
Anyway back to the small double bed, it’s small for two fatsos. Che-che commented the bed is comfy. Of course lah! She slants her body towards me leaving me no space, face almost smacking the wall. Only 2 nights, after that the rest of our trip’s bedding should be more comfortable. Suffer first enjoy later! I really live up to my motto huh?

Bathroom
Japanese style - I love it. But if only there’s a heater inside. Our undergarments didn’t dry even after we had it out for 2 nights. And there isn’t a rack inside for me to hang my hanger.

Himeji

This is the only accommodation that I’m looking forward to. Even the most expensive luxurious one in Hiroshima doesn’t excite me that much.
Capsule hotel カプセルホテル. Lots of capsule hotels around the world for solo travellers but what can one go wrong with a capsule hotel in Japan? The cleanliness maintained in any cheap accommodation and I’m sure even in love hotels (not that I’ve been to one 😂) will be up to standard to the luxurious 6* hotels. I can’t say much about capsule hotels in other countries but maybe I won’t mind trying it out.

LOCATION : 5/5
It’s located near to Himeji Station, only need to drag luggages for less than 5mins.
It’s located in a 7 storey building, taking up 2 floors.
Personally I like to have my accommodation near to a main train station as I don’t like to drag my luggage up onto a tram.

AMENITIES : 6/5
Where do I begin? Everything is so fresh, so interesting to me so…… I snap 📸 at whatever things I see 😂.
After checking in, we had to use the access card to tap into the area which is gender separated (ladies on 7F where the check-in counter is, Gents on 8F). One can also use this card to gain access into the relaxation corner on another level where hot and cold drinks are provided, even corn soup. If one gets too hungry and lazy to pop by the nearest Lawson (only 110m ?), there are 3 vending machines in the relaxation corner. 2 drinks and 1 instant noodles vending machines.

Anyway, back to the access area. Once we go into the wow wow area, we remove our shoes and put it in the locker (Number remains the same for the locker number and our bed) and use the disposable slippers provided.

There’s a place to lock up our luggages. I was smart enough to tell girl to combine whatever we need into one packing cube on our last night in Osaka. So once we get into the capsule hotel, we only needed to bring out that packing capsule and the toiletry bag.

Che-che wanted to go on the lower bunk

letting her mother climb up to hers 😭, she didn’t want to change with me. So I’m not sure if the bottom bunk is noisier with the slippers pik piak pik piak sound if people are walking around.
There weren’t many people staying then so … anyway I’m glad it’s not crowded.

Our bunks are slightly bigger than the rests. I had this thought when I was in Osaka - will I feel like I’m sleeping in a coffin? Hmm… luckily I don't have claustrophobia. Thanks to  💤  in the much smaller crew bunk as training ground.

This area is near the shower and toilet facilities. I tried to walk softly but the slipper still make that sound even on carpeted flooring. Noisy area I feel, I would probably need an earplug to sleep. So a note to myself is to put in a request next time (if I’m doing this again) to be away from bath area.

Shower area

Our public pools have to learn to do this. The wet and dry area is separated by a door.

Basin area aka wash her socks and undergarments area 😅
Makes one feel like he’s/she’s in an onsen

How can I forget they have this in capsule hotels? I took out our dirty laundry and did all the laundry here. We would have done the laundry the next day anyway so might as well just do it here.
The thing about laundry area in hotels - I don’t like to do it so hubby always have to be the one doing it. Coz I have a thing about leaving the room and go to another level, and coming back and need to shower and change clothings again. But this is different, I did it when we finished our shower so I was still stuck in the same spot waiting while FaceTiming lil’ one. I love it that the aircon here is colder too!

I only left to go to the lounge while it is in the dryer. Non-smoking throughout the whole place. A big yay!
Something caught my eye and then I remembered Tanabata. OMG! Isn’t that tomorrow? But pity they don’t hold any festivals here so…

Hanging my tanzaku on the bamboo branch. Wah…must complain why the pen like got no ink like that?! Will I get my wishes granted?

Inside each pod is a TV, headset, charging points, a cabinet with lock.

I’m glad we’re given ours in an area separated by a door, less noisy, but I think it was kept open in the night. I get to be the security guard 🤭 as my bed is the first top bunk.

Goodnight world!
Anyway, I didn’t cover my shade fully coz I was feeling hot inside and needed the cold air draft from outside. The fan inside the pod doesn't seem to work effectively as the sound it made. I took out my portable fan just incase I needed it for the night.

I moved around the mattress to feel which is a cooler and comfortable spot. Eventually I chose to sleep near the “curtain”. But che-che said it was comfortable for her. Maybe coz all she did was to sit inside her pod and watch TV 🙂 (her boy band was on TV) while I couldn’t rest still but go to the dryer; come back with hot hot clothes and did the folding. I was moving about so much. Whatever has happened to the “I’m not packing or washing your clothes for you all the next holiday” statement I made in March?

Woke up twice, once when there was a lady coming in and the last one was when I suddenly felt cold. Haha! Never cover myself with blanket and slept near the entry point for the last 4hrs 不冷才怪. Moved back to the normal sleeping  position after that for another 2hrs of sleep.

I woke up the next day feeling refreshed; reborn 😂 (not from waking up from a  coffin) and super ready to set off for Hiroshima our next destination.

I would want to do this again. This is really good for solo travellers when one only needs a bed, a place to shower and best - a place to do their laundry. I can totally stay in capsules for my solo travels and IF I DO have the opportunity. Che-che likes this too. Why wouldn’t she? She has the TV on with her fav boy band. She has her own bed confined in her own space and not hearing her mother snoring.
I saw a family of 4 in the lounge and was wondering how cheap can it be for them to stay in a capsule hotel. The only advantage I can think of is nobody fights for the toilet to shower or need to take turn for the 🚽 if it’s a family.

Hiroshima

This is the most expensive hotel booked for 3 nights. It’s a 4* hotel, and I was granted a high floor castle view. Woah! After having stayed in budget hotels in most holidays, I wasn't used to the atas smell in lobby, staffs attired in full suit and .... I feel rich. Haha! I paid good money for this.

At the entrance to our room. Directly opposite is the toilet cum bathroom. And there's a not-so-obvious partition between this spot and the room area. I like it this way as it gives me the idea to separate everything away.

King bed. Big enough for che-che and me. As usual, she will always chope the space where the socket is. I should have set the rules for her to let me have the space prior to leaving SIN. We had comfortable 3 nights in this hotel. I would love to be back here again.

LOCATION 5/5
It’s not that close to the main station so will need to take a streetcar for less than 10 stops. Relatively fast especially when one spends her time taking pictures and videos. Before I knew it, it was our stop.
It’s walkable to Hondori shopping arcade, the main sights around Peace Memorial Park.
Hotel is connected to a shopping mall, Pacela, which we didn't explore much. Ha! Just like the time we stayed in Canal City in Dec. Perhaps it's a good hint for me to come back Hiroshima.

AMENITIES 6/5
Since I paid so much for this accomodation, the amenities better be good. The room slippers are not the disposable type and they do change the slippers daily. It's nice to come back to the hotel to use a new pair of sterilised slippers after a day out under the rain (of course I washed my feet before putting on the slippers.
For a 4* hotel, I'm surprised they don't have ironing board and iron in the room. Not even room service!! The nearest Lawson is in Kencho-Mae station, less than 5mins walk away.

Fukuoka

Another 3 nights here before we say goodbye to Japan. As we're familiar with the little back streets here + che-che's good orientation skills, the 6mins (450m) walk from Hakata Station is even shorter. As compared to our previous 2 accomodations in Fukuoka in Dec, this hotel is so much closer and easier to get to the main station.

LOCATION 6/5
For this, I'll give it a 6/5 as I always prefer my accomodation to be near a main train station.
It's not near any major shopping mall but anyone will know that a main train station in any Japan cities is a shopping mall itself.
Family Mart and Lawson is just across the street.

AMENITIES 5/5
We were given a room in North Wing, I have no idea how the hotel room looks like in the other Wing. Every level has a different country theme. We were given 4th floor which is New York theme. Such coincidence.

The room itself is compact, although the room size is 4 sqm larger than Osaka's, I think the twin beds made the room look smaller. Nonetheless I'm glad I chose to sleep comfortably for the last 7 nights in Japan.
I only need to give up on the inconvenience every day we return back to hotel with the big luggage opened for a few hours. So it’s good to travel with less luggages. Learn to be like me, travel light and be an ah-soh! Honestly I can’t imagine if our family of 4 squeeze into this small hotel room (a comfortable size for our family of 3 fatsos would be above 30sqm)

This is what I meant by the inconvenience. The larger luggage is opened up for few hours until I had taken out the next day’s clothes and pack in the dirty laundry into the plastic bag after our shower. Bag is then closed and left standing by the wall.
The smaller luggage with pink bag is pushed to the fridge, in this picture it’s next to the basin and we’re still accessing the things in the fridge 😃.

The wash basin is in the room itself. Really weird. Stool is really useless there, can’t push in either.

Love Japanese bathroom. No heater in this also. Anyway, we didn’t have to do anymore laundry here, planned the number of clothings, undergarments n socks just nice for this 3 nights stay and had whatever needs to be laundered in Hiroshima hotel.

Room cleaning - citing a reason something related to eco receptionist mentioned that they usually clean a room after 3 days. Honestly speaking, I wish it was indicated in booking.com website about this. They don’t change towels but if we need a change we can put our used towels in a bag and hang it on our door before 10am or was it 11am? (anyway I’m long out of my room at that time 🤭)
After the first night, I asked for room cleaning but it wasn’t conveyed to the housekeeping. 🧐 Imagine my shock when I saw the trash not cleared when we got back from Nagasaki. We had 2 nights of trash, the next morning on the 3rd day (12th) I saw an old lady cleaning another room and I asked her to help me clear my trash. As usual we hung our used towels at the door to be changed.

Recommendations

Not earning any commission for this but sharing this range of plant-based items.

It started with at least 2 years back I tried the window cleaner. It keeps my mirrors and windows sparkly clean and I simply love the smell. And what surprised me was it works so much better than the other brands’ chemically laden window cleaners.

This year I came across their (1) all-purpose cleaner (2) handwash (3) bathroom cleaner + shower spray

(1) this is a “let’s try this. Looks interesting” and I’m sold into buying more 🤭. I have varying spray DIY bottles of castille soap + EO for the house so why did I buy this? Maybe it’s an aunty thingy?

Verdict : used both lavender and grapefruit. Prefer lavender smell. If only they have refill packs

(2) decided to try both lemon mint and green tea + aloe foaming handwash. The latter is the winner in terms of smell, I like lemon but I love anything with green tea fragrance. When we changed the kitchen sink, I decided to get a handwash gel to put in the dispenser. I got Sea Minerals which has rosemary + bergamot + lime inside. I’m not regretting anything at all!

Saw the sponsored ad in FB about their sale and took the opportunity to stock up $100+ worth of products.

Freebies

(3) I bought the bathroom cleaner and shower spray about a month back

but haven’t used it yet. I still have 2 more bottles of the Japanese brand 🍋 smell cleaner. Did I mention that I simply love Japanese cleaning products!! I don’t know why. Just an old aunty prefer to stand in the cleaning aisle than the food aisle.

Why I decided to try this shower spray?
I’ve always preferred to have a clean glass but it’s not easy to keep going to the toilet after my family members shower. Worst than “toilets checked!” in the aircraft. So the glass tend to leave behind water marks.
If only my family members each do their duty to dry the glass after their shower…

What does the spray do?
Method daily shower prevents soap scum and dissolves mildew, hard water stains, and lime stains.

I’ve had many experiments in trying to maintain a clean dry squeaky clean glass. Not forgetting, the natural way of baking soda + vinegar to cough-due-to-inhalation of water repel spray. The water repellent wash and a follow up with a spray and clean glass dry with newspaper saw me holding my breath and running out of the toilet every few seconds. It’s really that horrible! Time consuming too coz I spend more time running out of the toilet than staying inside scrubbing it.

I will try the shower spray another day. Not sure if I will like this coz you one is suppose to leave the water droplets on the glass. I prefer to have a dry shower screen lah!  Maybe the time when I do it, I’ll do it before I sleep so I wont see it 😜 and hopefully let the magic work overnight.
