I like to look outside when I’m awake, so I can be that irritating passenger who keeps lifting up and down the windowshade. However with newer aircrafts, the glass tinted-ness can be adjusted by the purser. I do check when I’m awake but it takes so long, longer than just lifting the shades up.
Just some knowledge/information in case I’m heading to NYC next time.
SQ 23
Yes, if flying SQ23 (JFK to SIN) eastwards, you will experience daylight, particularly over Europe, because you are flying into the sunrise. The westbound route on the same aircraft flies into darkness for a much longer portion of the journey.
Here's why:
Eastbound Travel:
When flying east, you are moving toward the direction of the Earth's rotation, which means you will "catch up" to the sunrise.
Sunrise Over Europe:
The flight path for the eastbound route goes over Europe, and as you pass over the continent, you will experience daylight before the aircraft continues over Asia.
Contrast with Westbound:
The reverse is true for a westbound flight (like
SQ24). That flight travels into the darkness of the night and will spend much more time in darkness.
SQ 24
Yes, you will see daylight on the SQ24 flight from Singapore (SIN) to New York (JFK) because it is a daytime flight with a significant portion spent over the Pacific Ocean during daylight hours. Flying east from Singapore to New York is a daylight flight, and while you fly from the Eastern Hemisphere to the Western Hemisphere, daylight is still visible during the journey.
Understanding the Flight Path
Eastbound Travel:
The SQ24 flight travels east from Singapore, crossing the Pacific Ocean to reach New York.
Daylight Exposure:
As the flight progresses, it moves into different time zones and continues to experience daylight for a substantial part of its long journey.
Key Points
Long-Haul Flight:
SQ24 is the world's longest regularly scheduled non-stop flight, which means it takes a considerable amount of time to complete.
Visual Experience:
Due to its daytime departure, a significant portion of the flight will be spent over daylight-lit areas of the world, offering clear views of the ocean and sky.
