On This Day - 8th Oct #Reminders from FB#

8th Oct 2017

Friendship spans a thousand miles.

Jap gf and her family (finally get to see her 2 girls!) here for a quick layover and a rushed meet up. It's a pity her girls are way too shy...there was no chicken n duck talk between our girls but rather no talk at all.....😉 hopefully there's chance in the near future for another meet up

Angry girl folding her own clothes into cabinet. From standing to sitting to lying on floor. Whole time mouth never stop complaining the amount of clothes to fold.
That's coz you procrastinated for days girl!
Then she got really angry and threw her shirt on the bed; then bend to pick it up; make noise; throw; pick it up.
TCS 新加坡电视塔 u r missing out one great talent here!

Footnote  in 2020 : Probably that's how she was of those selected to do DEP. Haha!

Still in school uniform ...... Cham! Lil one has HWs to do, need to do listening Compreh with her. Sigh......

Lunch at Wisma Atria's foodcourt

Footnote in 2020 : That was the year che-che sat for her PSLE. She went back to school for some planned activities for the graduands. Some of her friends flew off for their holiday and skipped school. She did ask me why we didn't go away on a holiday, not when I was on solo and her sister still needs to attend school.
That was the last year where I could enjoy the easier logistics in sending them to school together (altho as che-che was already in P5 when lil' one joined in, by then che-che had to stay back in school more often for extra lessons. Still it was a little easier for me where I could bring lil' one to I12 or Parkway for her lunch n get her homework done before packing food for dinner and heading to pick che-che up from school)

In the library : -
I need to get a headset and blinkers for Athena. Come library to do work (sigh....n I brought out revision papers for nothing!) n she's distracted.
No wonder she's born in the year of the horse 🐴
I need a muzzle to keep the young one quiet. 🐶
I think this rabbit 🐰 me should just sleep somewhere, (nice aircon) not racing with tortoise anyway

Lower primary?
That's the honeymoon years where they're tested what they learn in school?!?!
Try P3, P5 let them go without tuition. See can or not?

Footnote  in 2020 : this post garnered alot of comments from friends. Most citing that tuition is necessary. Over the years I have some friends who claimed they're not going to send their kids to tuition and not going to over burden their kids with tuition blah blah actually DID have their kids tuitioned. Hypocrites! So end of the day, is tuition needed? Of course! Most teachers have the mentality that kids have help at home.

  • Agree! But the pilot scheme, which parent want to volunteer their kids? Actually, they can pick a cohort in a some of the schools where I know few hv the luxury of tuition. MOE can already tell from there.

  • There are those I know, the parents handsoff. I had one child out of my 3 who have done PSLE , who was like that too , but only bc he totally hated tuition and refused to go for any.

    • Can't say blessed . Bc for the one who refused tuition , we just had to lower expectations. Life's that way. They have to learn to survive with or without.

    • If everyone doesn't take tuition, we'd all be equal. Hmm, the one without tuition was our no.3 . Come to think of it, no.1's time... Only Chinese tuition. First time PSLE, we very blur and relaxed.

    • All : the reason why I put up the picture was for the words "LOWER PRIMARY" as stated by the writer. Perhaps .... Another young mother or not a mother yet.
Ok mummies here, u agree with me that for Maths kids are tested what they learn in textbooks in P1 n P2? P3 they r tested on things u tear the whole textbook apart also dunno where the problem sums come from?
N the pathetic science textbooks?? Every year end, I throw the next yr book n ask "Athena go n read your storybook" in a cynical way. Her Roald Dahl books are thicker than her combined science textbooks from P3 to P5!
Language can't comment much coz it's basically acquired learning from reading.
some friends may hv heard me saying this before. It takes an experienced mother or a mother who's going thru' the same stage to understand what we're complaining abt n give each other support.
For a mother like me who's really hands on, I surrendered at P5 n sent my girl for Math class. But not too bad already for me to go thru those complicated word problems till P4, i saved 4 yrs of tuition fees, by attending workshops to keep myself up to date to know how to teach my kid i still hv extras $ if i had sent her for tuition. somemore i can teach both kids. 1 price for 2 kids.
if suddenly she do her work n forgot what method to use n then how? we hv to step in to help. this yr I was thinking should I send myself to Math tuition or her? In the end, I wanted to save my time for younger girl, I sent the older one for tuition. But yet again, behind the scene I really needed to understand how to do those weird sums I study them. Ay! For a person who scored A1 for Maths n Accounting. This is no joke man!
Weird problem sums "if A give B $xx he will hv xx%. If B give C he will hv xx% more/less than dunno who. Still hv one more part I can't rmbr." Reading the question already puts me off, my answer would be "don't give each other $, gimme the $ can already.

    • In our Singapore system, the textbooks are useless ! In my boys' school, booklist has no math textbooks. School produces their own set of notes. English and science have, but don't buy also won't lose out bc school notes better . So actually only need to buy Chinese textbooks. But as for the testing system. I've been through the entire system and seen through it ... Ridiculous. Secondary and even JC, the norm is to test at extremely high levels so that the student constantly at near failing levels but in the end results alright. Our system really tests who can survive the mental torture and not get depressed and downtrodden in the end. Only these students can continue working to the end

    • Lisa : in Athena's chinese tutor school there is no parental support. The vy minority, those that topped that school. Yes, would hv support in some way or other. Like u said Parents intense coaching is still tuitioning.
Sammi : u r truly blessed. I've had friends whose kids do without tuition. Like what my mom said "kids r still kids. They still 1 2 play. To hv a kid who is sensible to study n vy motivated is less than 1%"
A friend's son vy on the ball, no tuition thruout BUT he refuses to go out on weekends with family just to study at home. What family time is there? Child also need time to study what! Unless genius.
ALL : if I had a choice I also dowan send for tuition. Vy time-consuming. We send coz we needed the pros help.
I once read a book by this lady who wrote how she helped her child with her aggregate scores. I wanted to know her secrets. She's a good mom though but when I read to a certain chapter.. I realized it was printed 2008, means child took in 2007 or earlier. I saw her time-table planned. Child was able to go home after school everyday!! No tuition time coz its taken up by her mom's tuition. Now? Compulsory supplementary classes? CCAs and ... next year our primary levels SYF!! Stay back in school on the average 3x per week! So I closed the book n told myself "not applicable to current situation".

    • Joyce : Those who say don't need tuition. They either hv vy motivated kids or they still live in the old -thinking world. Come on! 2013 going to 2014!! This time technology better, definitely we need on par or much better knowledge right? We read old workers having to upgrade themselves also what ?!

    • I think have lah, but mostly just worksheets and past year papers . I don't remember it being very stressful except her grades took a steep dive in p5 which worried us some. She was so busy with CCA in p6 though. Scrapped through PSLE with comfortable margin to get in her affiliated secondary school. Cannot get in other schools liao... Her most stressful times were secondary and JC though. For her it was way worse than primary
